Read The Blue Notebook in a day. I am not bored nor crazy nor on holidays...
The book deals with the very uncomfortable, stomach-churning topic of prostitutes in Mumbai.
Actually, using the term "prostitutes" is putting it mildly. At least they are paid wages.
The correct term is child sex-slaves.
Did you know there is a horror hole in Mumbai called Street of Cages?
Did you know families driven by extreme poverty would sell their daughters to "pimps"?
Did you know they can be as young as 5?
Did you know that orphan boys are dressed as girls and also subject to the flesh trade?
Did you know these little boys are MORE sought after than the little girls?
Did you know the boys who reach puberty are then castrated?
I did not know this... Apparently, this red light area is famous. It is called Street of Cages because these children are paraded in front of steel cages and lined up along the street. Men paid 20 - 100 rupees per session (rm 2 - rm 10. yes. W. T. FFFF?!) . They have an average of 20 sessions a day, per child and never see a single rupee. Even more if you are a cute little boy or a pretty girl in demand.
Before this, the pimps would auction off the child's virginity to the highest bidder. After that, they are hauled off to an orphanage where they are forced to have sex with just about anyone who wanted them, beaten up, often drugged and tortured. This breaks their spirit and coerces them into a mental submission. Most children, when let out, no longer have the sense to escape. Those who try are severely punished. And when I say severely, I mean having their vagina's sewn-shut-type-of-severe. Many die out of infection. Those who survive fetch a higher rate because they now "specialize" in anal sex. If caught a second time, they are circumsized and probably left for dead. Argh, just writing about this makes me so angry!
I only kept reading until the end to see if there is a sliver of hope for the main character.
(I won't reveal the ending, in case you'd want to read it for yourself.)
As a book, I'd rate it as an "OK". It's not the most well written book I've read.
Disturbing, to say the least. You're left with a horrified sense of rage, disbelief and indignance. It made me hate these men and their stupid putrid dicks. I wanted to pour acid into their eyes and hollow out their skulls with light sabres and feed them alive to blood thirsty leper wild pigs (mightily deformed diseased pigs are what I had in mind...) . Seriously.. little innocent children? How sickly depraved can you get?
Reading this book, I can roughly comprehend why God destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gommorah by raining fire and brimstone on the whole city. Burning them all alive. (City of Sodom is how the term sodomy came about...so you can probably deduce what the people there were doing that pushed God's anger to the limit...If left up to me, I would create a special level of Hell for these men. For eternity, their penises would be put into a pencil sharperner- like device and slowly shredded into bits. Forever and ever. )
What have we become?
